FMR privacy policy

Friends of the Mississippi River highly values our donors, advocates, volunteers, event participants, e-newsletter subscribers and web visitors and strives to respect their privacy and preferences. Below is more information on the information we collect, how we use it, and how to control your data and/or discontinue contact.

Information we collect

• Information you voluntarily provide to us:

Individuals who register for events, complete a survey, donate online, and/or sign up to receive FMR’s e-communications voluntarily provide us with contact information (such as name, address, phone, e-mail address and optional demographic and emergency contact information as relevant for outings and activities). FMR also collects and stores information on events attended, publications subscribed to and received, donations/pledges made, and information provided by individuals in the form of comments or testimonials. This information is stored in our cloud-based secured relationship database, Bonterra, called EveryAction (PCI compliant).

To view, modify, or “opt out,” either now or at any time in the future, you can log in to your personal Bonterra account or contact us directly at privacy@fmr.org

For donors and paid event participants, we collect payment information: credit card number and expiration date, and billing information. Credit card numbers are not retained once the transaction is complete.

• Information we collect automatically:

We collect information sent to us automatically by your web browser. This information typically includes your IP address, the identity of your Internet service provider, the name and version of your operating system, the name and version of your browser, the date and time of your visit, and the pages you visit. Please check your browser if you want to learn what information your browser sends or how to change your settings.

- Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics, a web analytics tool, to better understand how visitors engage with our website. Google Analytics collects information anonymously and reports website trends to us without identifying individual visitors. Google Analytics reports what type of device an individual is using to view our site.

- EveryAction

We send our e-publications, action alerts, and event invitations via EveryAction/Bonterra. EveryAction/Bonterra uses web beacons in the emails sent via their platform. When we send emails, EveryAction/Bonterra tracks behavior such as who opened the emails and who clicked the links. This allows us to measure the performance of our email campaigns. The EveryAction/Bonterra web beacons are single-pixel gifs. Web beacons allow us to collect information about when you open the email, your IP address, your browser or email client type, and other similar details.

- Cookies

A "cookie" is a bit of data our site can send to your browser, which may then be stored on your computer’s hard drive. If you’re concerned about your privacy and the use of cookie technology, you may set your web browser to notify you when you receive a cookie, or to refuse cookies from FMR. Using these settings or declining cookies may limit the functionality we can provide.

How we use your information

FMR uses your information to understand your needs and provide you with better service. Specifically, we use your information to help you complete a transaction, communicate back to you, and update you on FMR programs and services. Credit card numbers are used only for donation or payment processing and are not retained for other purposes once the transaction is complete. We use the comments you offer to provide you with the information requested, and we take seriously each recommendation as to how we might improve communication.

FMR also shares anonymous aggregate information with funders and in public materials. Examples include showcasing the number of volunteers who worked at a particular habitat restoration site, their ZIP codes and race, gender, age or other demographic information as provided by the participant.

Sharing personal information

FMR will not sell, rent, or lease your personal information to for-profit businesses.

For donors, we occasionally upload contact information into third-party databases for information enhancement. At any time, you can request that we not share your information. Use of any donor information (phone numbers, emails, giving history, etc) will be limited to the internal purposes of FMR and only to further the mission of FMR.

We do not exchange or share information of advocates, volunteers and e-newsletter subscribers who are not donors (see above). However, when signing a petition or action alert, the message sent to the relevant decision-makers or policymakers may be made publicly available as a matter of public record. (FMR makes efforts not to publish addresses/email addresses. However, we cannot control what the recipients or targets of such advocacy messages share.)

Controlling your personal information

At any time, you can request that we not share your personal information and we will take you off that list. Use of any other donor information (phone numbers, emails, giving history, etc.) will be limited to the internal purposes of FMR and only to further the mission of FMR.

Upon written or verbal request, you may be removed from our mailing lists in both printed and electronic formats. (A link to manage your email subscriptions should be at the bottom of every email from FMR.)

If you have comments or questions about our privacy and discontinue contact policy, please email privacy@fmr.org or call 651.222.2193.

FMR adheres to the principles contained within the Donor Bill of Rights.
